Obituary of W. W. Blackwell; Death Wednesday Morn of W. W. Blackwell,
"A Great Soul Passes Over the Silent River -Was Ever Faithful IN a Busy
and Useful Life.
The death angel in his mighty sweep across the universe tarried
long enough in Henderson Wednesday morning to claim W. w. Blackwell, prominent
lodgeman, citizen and business mann, who breathed his last at 7:30 o'clock
at his residence on North Main street, following an illness of less than
one week.
Little hope was entertained for his recovery from the outset,
as Mr. Blackwell suffered a stroke of Paralysis at his home last Thursday
morning. The patient revived several times before his death which
gave his family hope of recovery, buthis improvement was short.
Mr. Blackwell was probably the best known Knight of Pythias in
the United States. He served a two-years' term as supreme chancellor
of the order, and while serving in that high capacity was one of the first
men in the United States to see the German menace. he then learned
that among several German, K. of P. lodges the ritual had been printed
in German, and after a strenuous fight in the grand lodge, succeeded in
having a rule adopted that all rituals of subordinate lodges be printed
in English and that no other ritual shall be printed in any other language,
except the language in the county in which the lodge was located.
In this movement Mr. Blackwell saw what he believed to be an attempt to
cover up matters pertaining to the lodges which desired to use their native
language in the ritual.
Mr. Blackwell is survived by his wife and two young children.
The funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Thursday
afternoon from the residence on North Main street by Rev. Thos. Cummins,
pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. The Knights of Pythias will
have charge of the services.
A few days ago, Mr. Blackwell was stricken with paralysis.
He revived wonderfully the following day and it was believed that he would
recover. On Sunday he showed great improvement and strong hopes were
held out, but on Monday he sank into unconsciousness and remained in that
state all day Tuesday.
Mr. Blackwell is one of the leading Knights of Pythias in the
United States. Some thirty years ago he served a two-year term as
Supreme Chancellor of that order and is recognized as the leading authority
in the United States in the order. For a number of years he represented
Kentucky in the grand lodges and it became a by-word that unless W. W.
Blackwell was present the grand lodge would not be a success.
Mr. Blackwell has few equals as an orator upon fraternal subjects.
In all important matters that commanded the attention of the grand lodge
Mr. Blackwell was among the first to be called upon to discuss the
subject.
His friends here and elsewhere hope that his life and brillian
intellect will be spared.
Child of WILLIAM BLACKWELL and MARCIA STINSON is:
i. ERNEST3 BLACKWELL.
