The information about the McClendon Cemetery was taken from the files of Ora CHANDLER. The cemetery is located six miles north of Dixon, Kentucky, and about one half mile east of the intersection of Highway 41A and Route 56 on a farm originally owned by Benjamin MCCLENDON. Benjamin died in 1808, and the farm was left to his wife, Sarah and his children, William, Jesse, and Joel. It is believed that this farm was the location of the tree that the head of Micajay HARPE, a notorious murderer, was placed following his capture in 1799. He was beheaded by Moses STIGALL for killing STIGALL’s wife and child. The HARPE story is told in detail by Sarah McClendon in her letter to her son Joel (the letter is reprinted in the LETTERS section of the APPENDIX).
Joel McClendon inherited the farm from his father and gave it to his daughter, Sarah and her husband, Hugh B. CHANDLER. Joel and Sarah (Sally) McClendon lived with Hugh and Sarah CHANDLER for about ten years prior to the death of Sarah McClendon. The farm was then passed on to Dennis and Eliza Ann (SAMMONS) CHANDLER.
Joel McClendon operated an inn for travelers, many who came to his farm for the "Racing Event", which he ran on that part of the farm now owned by the Milton WHITE family. One of those travelers was Wright E. BIBB, who registered for the night on 17 Sep 1821. Mr. BIBB became ill and died that night. Joel McClendon, not knowing of Mr. BIBB’s family, buried him on a high beautiful knoll and erected a marker which now stands with the following inscription:
In Memory
of
Wright E. BIBB
Who departed this life
Sept. 17, 1821
Age 37
So this was the beginning of McClendon Cemetery. Mr. BIBB had a roll of 300 one dollar bills. Joel sold Mr. BIBB’s horse and saddle and with the three hundred dollars distributed it among the widows and orphans of the community.
