HART, HENDERSON, LANE, YATES posted by Terri McDonald Hauk on Sunday, March 1, 1998

I am descended from Benjamin and Nancy Morgan HART via their son, John HART who married Patience LANE. Benjamin's brothers Nathaniel HART, Col. Thomas HART, and David HART, along with Richard HENDERSON and 3 other men, comprised the "Transylvania Company", established in 1775. Nathaniel moved to KY, lived on the Kentucky River near Boonesboro, and died in 1782, leaving his wife and 9 children. David 'visited' KY, then went back to NC to live and die. Col. Thomas HART lived in Lexington, KY, and died there 1808. He had 7 children. Benjamin and Nancy HART raised their family in GA. After Benjamin's death, Nancy eventually moved to Clarke Co, GA to be with her son John HART and his family. They all then relocated to Henderson Co., KY around 1802-03. So these "Transylvania" HARTs were in many parts of Kentucky! (PS: I'm also looking for YATES info in Henderson Co., KY!)

SNEED, WILLIAMS posted by Patsy Thomas on Sunday, March 1, 1998

SNEED - WILLIAMS Bible The records of the SNEED - WILLIAMS families were copied from a very large old Bible. This Bible had been given to Mary Williams SNEED by her father, William WILLIAMS in Granville County, North Carolina in 1776. This William WILLIAMS was brother of the Judge John WILLIAMS, a member of the TransylvaniaCompany. Mary Williams SNEED and her husband, Stephen SNEED lived and died in Granville County, but their son Richard SNEED and his wife and children came to Henderson County, KY about 1850. They evidently brought the Bible with them and it has belonged to members of his branch of the SNEED family in Henderson since that time. For many years the Bible was in the possession of Susan Henderson Sneed THOMPSON and her sister, Marianna Soaper Sneed RANKIN. After the death of Mrs. THOMPSON in 1961, Mrs. RANKIN closed her home in Henderson and stayed with her niece, Kate Mason COOPER, in Nashville, TN. While she was away thieves drove a truck to the back of Mrs. RANKIN's home and took away many valuable antiques, silver and other items that could never be replaced. The Bible was also taken. Many objects were recovered but the Bible remained lost for about two years. There was a tenant house on a farm in the Geneva section of Henderson County being dismantled and in an old trunk the SNEED - WILLIAMS Bible was found and returned to the family. It had been water-soaked and the bindings in bad condition, but most of the writing can still be read. Some pages faded but some of them are still bright and clear. The records in this Bible are written on the backs of full page pictures. It is a very remarkable Bible. Now in the possession of Richard Henderson SOAPER and his brother, Stephen Sneed SOAPER, great-great-grandsons of Stephen and Mary Williams SNEED - the original owners of this Bible. Compiled and copied by: Katheryn Howe Basett. Karen is online at KKPR31A@Prodigy.com.

DENTON, DURFEE, DURPHY, HEBARD posted by Marilyn Garrison on Saturday, March 7, 1998

I am a descendent of Elisha DURFEE and another of his daughters, Mary Elizabeth, who married Charles HEBARD, a blacksmith in Henderson Co. in the early to mid-1800's. The town of Hebbardsville is said to have been named for him. I recently found a quite good compilaton of the history of the Samuel DENTON family in a History of Henderson Co. I have been in contact with a descendent of another of Elisha DURFEE's daughters, Sebilia, who married Caleb Hall. The Halls also lived in the Hebbardsville area. I have been seeking to trace the children of the two DURFEE daughters, who married the DENTONs, both father, Samuel, and son, Turner. I did find a list of the children born to both of these families in the biographical sketch. Any information you have to give would be helpful. Marilyn Garrison.

HANCOCK posted by George C Willick on Saturday, March 7, 1998

William F. HANCOCK's stone has been recorded in Henderson County and is listed as being at the Watson-Thornberry cemetery. It isn't. When I contacted the man who did the original records (- Blue), he checked his original list and told me that the HANCOCK stone did not appear there. The assumption is that someone found it on a nearby farm and the data was listed to the nearest cemetery...that data is: William. F. HANCOCK b August 8, 1795 d January 23, 1863 Yes, he was a blacksmith, but his specialty was chainmaking. He was/is my ggg grandfather..

Kessiah may have been the oldest and daughter of first ANN. Data on her age varies. My grandfather was grandson of Thomas G W BENTLEY, twin of John A J BENTLEY (who moved to Iowa). Thomas BENTLEY moved to Owen County after his first wife, a HANCOCK (Sarah?), died and remarried. Thomas is buried and well marked in the Owenton cemetery. My grandfather, Mondy MARTIN, said that William BENTLEY was from England and drown in the Ohio river. (I was smart enough to write all of this down at the time.) My hunting in the Henderson County bottoms didn't turn up anything as all had been leveled in the area nw of Clay cemetery where the BENTLEY's farmed..

CAHO, CURTIS, KAHOE, POWERS, SUBLETTE, SWORDS, YOUNT posted by Chuck Caho on Sunday, March 8, 1998

I am trying to locate information related to George Reddard CAHO. We know that he was born in Henderson KY May 30 1870 and had brothers and sisters. We know very little about his family- After he moved to Illinois and raised his family, he told them that all of his family with the exception of Robert and a sister had died of yellow fever. He refused to give any more information about his family. A brother James M. is listed in the Marriage records of Henderson KY 1859-1900, as having a second marriage to Catherine YOUNT September 8, 1886. In the 1870 Census of Davies County a household is listed with the members being James CAHO, Elizabeth CAHO, Amanda CAHO, Annie CAHO and George CAHO. In the June 1, 1880 census it lists a George KAHOE as being 11 years, living with Mary E. SUBLETTE and Conrad SUBLETTE - having been adopted by Mary E. SUBLETTE and attending school in Henderson County. She is listed as a white single female farmer dying of typhoid fever at the age of 61 in Henderson County. Mary's mother and father were John and Anna marie SUBLETTE - Henderson Death records #431-431 District # 2 P. 169. We are reasonably sure from the marriage records of James CAHO , that John CAHO and Jane POWERS were the mother and father. The question remains- Who was John CAHO's father and where did he come from? Why was George CAHO adopted by Mary E. SUBLETTE? Why did George tell his family here that his immediate family had all died but two, when we can find listings of them in various other families and relationships? The biggest thing I am trying to do, is to go one earlier than John CAHO and hopefully tie the Missouri and Washington CAHO's together with the Illinois CAHO's. Would appreciate any help and thanks for allowing me to post this. Chuck Caho CAHOCA@aol.com
